Newsletter 1 – 8th September 2017

Dear Parents / Carers,

Firstly, can I welcome everyone back to school at the start of this new academic year. This year we welcome Mrs Lisa Wright to our staff team, who is job sharing with Mrs Lancashire in Key Stage 1. A very warm welcome also, to all our 50 new reception children and their families, and all the other children joining us from other schools. It was wonderful to come back to our superb new playgrounds, so may I take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported the PSA ‘Operation Outside’ campaign; the playgrounds look fantastic and the children and staff absolutely love them!

Year Planner With this newsletter, you should receive a copy of the year planner. This is as accurate as we can be at this time, occasionally dates do have to change and we will send a text or letter if there are significant changes. Please ensure that the office always have your correct contact details. I would like to remind everyone that the text messaging system is there to send important/ urgent messages not simply as a reminder for events and dates.

School Photographs Please note that individual and family portraits will take place on Tuesday 3rd October 2017 in the school hall. Parents who wish to bring their pre-school children to be photographed with their siblings should come to the hall at 8.30am.

Turning circle Once again we aim to keep our children as safe as possible, by adhering to a strict operation of the turning circle policy. Can I remind everyone of the need to be really vigilant and cautious when driving into the school. Please do not park on the turning circle as this prevents the flow of traffic. Also please, please show respect to the residents by parking courteously outside school. Please inform everyone, who may pick up your child of the policy. Thank you, as always, for your support.

Morning Registration The school day officially begins at 8.45am and all children should be in school by this time. Registers close at 8.50am. After this children risk being marked late or absent. Children must report to the office to ensure they are marked on roll. Late marks and unauthorised absences will be recorded. If on a rare occasion you are unavoidably late, please inform the office.

Holidays in term time As I explained in the July newsletter, the Local Authority have tightened the rules again, on holidays in term time, from September 2017, and I am now no longer able to authorise any absence for holidays, regardless of good attendance, except in truly exceptional circumstances. If you do take a holiday and it has not been approved, it is now very likely that you will receive a Fixed Penalty Notice from the Local Authority. Once again I thank you for your help with this matter and ask that you discuss any planned holidays with me, before booking.

School uniform At the start of the year, please label all uniform clearly so that lost items can be returned quickly. Also may I remind you no jewellery should be worn to school except watches and small stud earrings. We also politely ask that girls wear small headbands and bobbles, in school colours, that reflect our uniform policy.

Playtime snacks Please can you ensure that any breaktime snacks provided for junior pupils are as healthy as possible. I appreciate that this is a grey area but we definitely do not allow nuts, crisps, sweets or chocolate. I leave the other things to your discretion but would welcome your support with this.

School Dinners Please note one week’s notice is required if your child wishes to change from school dinners to packed lunch, due to the pre-ordering of the food. This will also apply to those receiving the universal free school meal.

Karate Club at Walton Holymoorside school This popular and successful club runs from 9.30-10.30am on Saturday morning, in the school hall and is open to children from 6 years upwards. They currently have vacancies for new members. If you are interested, please call Nigel Briggs on 01246 567913. All the profits from the club are donated to school, for which we are very grateful.

Information evening for all parents and Carers I would like to offer you the opportunity to attend a Parent Information Evening. The aims of the evening are: to explain this year’s school improvement priorities; to hear more about the new national curriculum expectations for pupils in Year 2 and Year 6; to learn about our Growth Mindset initiative and the assessment for learning techniques we are using to engage all pupils in their learning. We will be holding the evening on Monday 2nd October 2017 in the school hall and the meeting is open to all parents and carers. However, in order to ascertain how many sessions we need to run, could I ask you to register your interest on the slip below, so we can confirm the arrangements for the evening as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Palmer-Coole
